Message from Michael Sweeney
Tuesday, 11 March 2008
Welcome to the Web site of the Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication.
As president of the organization for 2007-08, I am excited about all that we do to promote excellence in journalism and academics.
SWECJMC comprises the journalism programs of colleges and universities in eight Southwestern states.
Our organization publishes Southwestern Mass Communication Journal; runs an annual conference (it’s in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in fall 2008); and promotes scholarship through a reviewed paper competition and invited panel discussions.
What sets us apart from other academic journalism groups? Like them, we promote excellence. But we are small enough to promote personal connections among our members. Our conferences feel more like reunions than conventions.
A personal note: I presented my very first academic paper at an SWECJMC conference in Tempe, Arizona, in 1989 when I was a master’s student at the University of North Texas. It was a fun, friendly, and informative experience. I invite you to come see what it’s all about.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Sweeney
